Allan ran a preschool kindergarten in Michigan. The school was a stone and log mansion surrounded by forest and meadows, with a playground castle and a wishing well. This magical setting inspired The Dragon Child. Later a web developer, Allan continued sharing stories, songs, and guitar as a volunteer in first grade in school in Oakland, California.
